English
"Not hearing of it is not as good as hearing it; hearing it is not as good as seeing it; seeing it is not as good as understanding it; and understanding it is not as good as putting it into practice." Xunzi lays out four ascending stages of learning, with action as the final and highest test — knowledge that never becomes practice remains, in his view, incomplete.
A Word for Today
Understanding something can feel, in the moment, like already having done it, which is a comfortable but misleading feeling. Xunzi ranks learning in four stages, hearing, seeing, knowing, doing, with action placed last and highest, not first and easiest. Knowledge that stops at 'I understand' remains suspended, unfinished. Even a clumsy attempt at putting it into practice does more to complete the learning than another round of getting it clearer in the head.
