千丈之隄、以螻蟻之穴潰。百尺之室、以突隙之煙焚。
訓読
千丈の隄も、螻蟻の穴を以て潰え、百尺の室も、突隙の煙を以て焚く。
現代語訳
千丈もの高さがある堤防でさえ、蟻の穴ひとつから崩れる。百尺もある立派な家でさえ、煙突の小さな隙間から漏れた煙火から焼け落ちる。韓非子は『老子』の「其の脆きは判ち易く、其の微なるは散じ易し」を敷衍し、大きな災いはいつも小さな見落としから起こると説いた。
中文釋義
千丈高的堤坝,也会因为蝼蚁的洞穴而溃决;百尺高的房屋,也会因为烟囱缝隙漏出的火星而焚毁。韩非子在《喻老》中借此发挥《老子》"其脆易泮,其微易散"之意,说明大祸往往起于被人忽视的细微之处。

Even a mile-long dike collapses because of an ant's burrow; even a grand hundred-foot mansion burns down because of a spark leaking through a crack in the chimney. Elaborating on the Laozi's teaching that what is fragile is easily broken and what is faint is easily scattered, Han Feizi shows how great disasters almost always begin from some tiny, overlooked flaw.

A dike a thousand feet high can give way because of a single ant's hole; a grand mansion can burn down because of one spark leaking through a crack. Han Feizi's point is about scale deceiving judgment — the larger and sturdier something appears, the easier it becomes to dismiss its small flaws as unworthy of attention. A minor gap in a procedure, a small discrepancy in a ledger, one vague promise left unclarified — none of these looks dangerous alone. But disaster does not scale with size; it goes looking for whatever nobody is watching.
