English
Asked by his disciple Zigong for a single word to live by for life, Confucius answered: reciprocity — what you yourself would not want, do not impose on others. Stated almost negatively, the rule demands something quite active: a constant, honest check on one's own likes and dislikes before acting toward anyone else. Few sentences in world ethics compress so much into so little.

A Word for Today
When unsure how to treat someone, the quickest check is not a rule but a question: would I want this done to me. Most of the time, the answer is already there before any reasoning begins. Elaborate justification rarely does what this one honest question does on its own. The difficulty is never in understanding it — everyone does — but in remembering to ask it right when feeling runs high. The small, daily judgments of decency tend to rest on nothing grander than this habit of checking oneself first.
