朝聞道，夕死可矣。
訓読
朝に道を聞かば、夕べに死すとも可なり。
現代語訳
朝のうちに真理を悟ることができたなら、その日の夕方に死んでもかまわない、と孔子は言い切る。誇張のようでいて、これは道を求める心の切実さを語ったものであり、生きる長さよりも、生きているあいだに何を悟り得たかを問う、孔子の求道の姿勢を鮮烈に伝えている。
中文釋義
"朝闻道,夕死可矣",非教人轻生,乃极言闻道之重于性命。道者,天地人事之至理也。孔子一生栖栖遑遑,周游列国以求道之行,此语正是其求道心切之写照——生命之长短,不如所悟之深浅重要。能于有生之年真正明白一分道理,虽即刻辞世,亦无所憾。

"If I hear the Way in the morning, I could die that evening content." The line is not a wish for death but a measure of how much Confucius valued genuine understanding — placing the depth of what one has grasped in life above the mere length of that life.

Some days stretch long yet leave nothing settled; others are brief but weighty, because one thing finally became clear. The worth of a day is not measured by the clock but by what actually lodges in the mind. The urgency behind seeking real understanding is not for the sake of appearing profound, but because time is finite, and delay carries no guarantee that clarity will ever arrive. Rather than counting how many days remain, it is more useful to ask whether today brought even a small piece of real understanding.
