歳寒くして、松柏の後れて凋むを知る

歲寒，然後知松柏之後凋也。
訓読
歳寒くして、然る後に松柏の後れて凋むを知る。
現代語訳
一年でもっとも寒い季節になって初めて、松や柏が他の木々より遅くまで葉を落とさずにいることが分かる、と孔子は言う。平穏な時にはどの木も青々として見分けがつかないが、厳しい試練にさらされて初めて、真に節操を保つ者とそうでない者との違いが明らかになることを、自然の姿に託して語った一節である。
中文釋義
平日草木皆青,难辨其性;唯至岁末严寒,百卉凋零,方见松柏独能后凋,坚贞之质始显。孔子借此喻君子之操守——顺境之中,人人皆可言忠信、称仁义,唯有身处逆境、大厦将倾之际,方能验其真伪。此语后世常用以称许患难中不改其志之士,实为对气节最凝练之礼赞。

"Only when the year turns cold do we see that the pine and cypress are the last to lose their leaves." In fair weather every tree looks equally green; it is adversity alone that reveals which ones truly hold their character — a natural image Confucius uses to praise integrity that only shows itself under pressure.

A Word for Today
In fine weather every plant looks equally green, and there is no telling which roots run deep. Only when the cold season strips the rest bare does it become clear which trees were holding steady all along. The same test applies to character, anyone can speak well in comfortable times, but what a person actually is shows only under pressure. Worth wondering, on an easy day, which kind of tree one is.
