仁遠からんや、我仁を欲すれば

仁遠乎哉？我欲仁，斯仁至矣。
訓読
仁遠からんや。我仁を欲すれば、斯に仁至る。
現代語訳
仁は、はるか遠くにあるものだろうか。いや、そうではない。自分が仁を求めようと心から思うなら、その瞬間にもう仁はここに至っている、と孔子は言う。仁徳を、特別な資質を持つ者だけが到達できる高みとして遠ざけるのではなく、誰もが今この場で踏み出せる意志の問題として捉え直した、力強い励ましの言葉である。
中文釋義
仁看似高远难及,孔子却断然否定此说——仁不在他处,只在一念之间。我若真心愿求仁,仁便当下即至,无需外求,亦无待时日。此语打破仁德专属圣贤之迷思,揭示成德之关键,不在天资禀赋之高低,而在一己意愿之真切与否。仁,始终是一个可以立刻着手去做的选择,而非遥不可及的境界。

A Word for Today
Character often gets treated as a distant destination, something to arrive at once conditions are right. Confucius says otherwise, the moment one genuinely wants to act with humaneness, it is already present. Waiting to feel fully ready before being kinder or more honest usually means waiting indefinitely. The smaller, more useful question is simply whether one is willing to take the first small step now.
