士は以て弘毅ならざるべからず

士不可以不弘毅，任重而道遠。仁以為己任，不亦重乎？死而後已，不亦遠乎？
訓読
士は以て弘毅ならざるべからず。任重くして道遠し。仁以て己が任と為す、亦た重からずや。死して後已む、亦た遠からずや。
現代語訳
志ある者は、心を広く持ち、意志を強く保たなければならない。その責務は重く、歩むべき道は遠いからである。仁の実現を自分自身の使命として引き受ける——これほど重い務めがあるだろうか。そして、その務めは死ぬまで終わることがない——これほど遠い道のりがあるだろうか。弟子の曾子が語ったこの言葉は、仁の道を生涯かけて担い続ける覚悟の重さを、力強く言い表している。
中文釋義
弘者,度量宽广;毅者,意志坚定。曾子谓士人当具此二德,方能担当天下重任、行走漫漫长路。所谓重任,即以实现仁道为己身终生之使命;所谓远路,即此使命至死方休,永无懈怠之日。此语气魄雄浑,后世士人常引以自励——真正的担当,不在一时之壮举,而在终身不辍之坚持。

"A gentleman must be broad-minded and resolute, for his burden is heavy and his road is long. He takes humaneness as his own burden — is that not heavy? Only in death does the road end — is that not long?" Zengzi's words describe moral commitment not as a single act of courage but as a lifelong endurance, undertaken with no expectation of ever laying it down.

抱负越大,路便越长,途中气力不继是常有的事,曾子早已说破。但这份任重道远,从不是要人一口气走完,而是要人把眼前一件事办妥当。今日该做的,也许只是极小的一步,与最终的使命相比不值一提,可正是这些小步,一日日走下来,才撑得起那条看不到头的路,远路从不怕慢,只怕断。
A Word for Today
The larger the aspiration, the longer the road, and running low on resolve partway through is nothing unusual, Zengzi said as much long ago. But carrying a heavy task for a long road was never meant as a single sustained sprint, it means handling well whatever is in front of one today. What needs doing now might be a small step, barely worth mentioning against the larger purpose, yet it is exactly these small steps, taken day after day, that keep a road without a visible end walkable at all.
