戰わずして、人の兵を屈するは善の善なる者なり

是故百戰百勝、非善之善者也。不戰而屈人之兵、善之善者也。
訓読
是の故に百戰百勝は、善の善なる者に非ざるなり。戰わずして人の兵を屈するは、善の善なる者なり。
現代語訳
百回戦って百回勝つことは、最善のうちの最善ではない。戦わずして敵の軍を屈服させることこそ、最善のうちの最善である。孫子にとって戦闘そのものは、双方に損害を強いる不完全な手段であり、真の勝利とは謀略・外交・準備によって相手が戦う前から抗う気力を失う状態を作り出すことにあった。
中文釋義
打一百次仗、赢一百次,并不是最高明中的最高明;不用交战就使敌军屈服,才是最高明中的最高明。在孙子看来,战斗本身是一种双方都要付出损耗的不完美手段;真正的胜利,是靠谋略、外交与充分的准备,让对手在开战之前就已丧失抗争之心。

To win a hundred battles out of a hundred is not the highest excellence; to subdue the enemy's forces without fighting at all—that is the highest excellence. For Sun Tzu, combat itself is an imperfect instrument that costs both sides; true victory is built through strategy, diplomacy, and preparation so thorough that the opponent loses the will to resist before any battle begins.

Beating an opponent matters less than never letting the confrontation arise in the first place. What Sun Tzu values is not the number of rounds won but whether preparation and relationships are thorough enough that conflict never has to happen at all. Real skill usually shows up not in cleaning up after a clash, but in laying groundwork so complete that agreement comes without one, work that mostly goes unnoticed.
