兵の形は、實を避けて虛を擊つ

夫兵形象水、水之形、避高而趨下。兵之形、避實而擊虛。水因地而制流、兵因敵而制勝。
訓読
夫れ兵の形は水に象る。水の形は、高きを避けて下きに趨く。兵の形は、實を避けて虛を擊つ。水は地に因りて流れを制し、兵は敵に因りて勝ちを制す。
現代語訳
そもそも軍の形は水に似ている。水は高いところを避けて低いところへと流れる。軍もまた同じで、敵の充実したところを避け、手薄なところを撃つ。水が地形に応じて流れを定めるように、軍もまた敵の出方に応じて勝ちを定める。これは『孫子』全体の締めくくりに近い篇に置かれた言葉で、固定した必勝の型など無く、その都度相手を見て形を変えることこそが「勝ち方」であるという結論である。

用兵的形态,如同水一般。水的形态,是避开高处流向低处;用兵的形态,是避开敌人充实之处,攻击其空虚之处。水依地形而决定流向,用兵依敌情而决定取胜之道。这是《孙子兵法》接近全书总结处的一句话:天下没有一成不变的必胜之形,唯有随时因对手而变,才是真正的取胜之道。

The disposition of an army resembles water: water avoids high ground and flows toward low ground; an army avoids the enemy's strength and strikes at their weakness. Just as water's course is shaped by the terrain, an army's victory is shaped by the enemy it actually faces. Coming near the close of the Art of War, this line delivers something like a final verdict: there is no fixed formula for victory—only the constant willingness to change shape according to one's opponent.

The same logic applies elsewhere: there is no formula that wins every time, only a willingness to change shape according to what the situation actually presents. Insisting on one method that has worked before eventually meets a case where it does not. Staying adaptable, like water, is what actually holds up over time.
