夏虫は、以て冰を語る可からず

夏蟲不可以語於冰者，篤於時也；曲士不可以語於道者，束於教也。
訓読
夏虫は以て冰を語る可からざる者は、時に篤ければなり。曲士は以て道を語る可からざる者は、教えに束さるればなり。
現代語訳
夏だけを生きる虫に氷のことを語っても分からないのは、その虫が短い季節に縛られているからであり、偏った学問しか修めていない者に大いなる道を語っても通じないのは、身についた教えに縛られているからである。井蛙の譬えに続けて北海若が語る言葉で、時間という尺度・教養という尺度、それぞれの限界を並べて示している。
中文釋義
夏虫只见得一季炎凉,故无从想象寒冰;曲士只守得一家之言,故无从领会大道。二者皆非资质有亏,而是各自所受的时间与教养,已在不知不觉间划定了理解的边界。庄子借河伯之问,提醒学者:所学愈专、所守愈固,愈须警惕这份边界正悄然收窄视野。
English
A summer insect cannot conceive of ice, bound as it is by a single season; a scholar narrowly trained cannot grasp the greater Way, bound by the teachings that shaped him. Following directly on the frog-in-the-well image, this line extends the same warning from space to time and to education — the very things that form us can just as easily wall us in.

A Word for Today
The deeper one goes into a specialty, the easier it becomes to mistake one familiar season for the whole year. The summer insect cannot conceive of ice, not for lack of ability but because its training has quietly drawn a wall around it. Alongside real expertise, it helps now and then to look past that wall, so that what is merely familiar does not get mistaken for what is simply true.
