大知閑閑，小知間間；大言炎炎，小言詹詹。

大知は閑閑たり、小知は間間たり。大言は炎炎たり、小言は詹詹たり。

大きな知恵はゆったりと広く構え、小さな知恵は細部にこだわり分け隔てする。大きな言葉は勢いよく燃え広がるようであり、小さな言葉はくどくどとつまらぬ詮索に終始する。人の心の働き方をいくつかの型に分けて描き出す、齊物論冒頭近くの一節である。
中文釋義
大知者气度宽舒,不汲汲于分辨琐屑;小知者则锱铢必较,处处生出分别。大言者气势磅礴,如火之炎炎;小言者喋喋不休,如虫之詹詹。庄子借此描摹世间心智与言语的种种样态,为其后齐物之论——泯灭是非、消解争辩——预先埋下伏笔。
English
Great understanding is broad and unhurried; small understanding busies itself with fine distinctions. Great words blaze like fire; small words chatter on without end. This early line from "The Adjustment of Controversies" sketches contrasting temperaments of mind and speech, setting up Zhuangzi's larger argument that most disputes arise from minds too small to see past their own distinctions.
