老子道徳経 第46章
儉欲

原文
天下有道、卻走馬以糞。天下無道、戎馬生於郊。禍莫大於不知足、咎莫大於欲得。故知足之足、常足矣。
書き下し文
天下に道有れば、走馬を卻けて以て糞す。天下に道無ければ、戎馬郊に生ず。禍ひは足るを知らざるより大なるは莫く、咎は得んと欲するより大なるは莫し。故に足るを知るの足るは、常に足る。
現代語訳
天下に道が行われていれば、軍馬もまた戦場から退けられ、畑を耕す馬として使われる。天下に道が失われれば、身重の馬までも国境の野で子を産む羽目になる。禍いの中で、足ることを知らないより大きなものはなく、咎の中で、欲しいものを得ようとするより大きなものはない。ゆえに、足ることを知っているという、その足りた状態こそが、いつまでも変わらぬ満ち足りた状態なのである。
中文釋義
天下太平,战马便被卸下鞍甲,回到田间耕作;天下失道,连怀胎的母马也不得不在战场近郊产驹。世间最大的祸患,莫过于不知满足;最大的过错,莫过于贪得无厌。人心一旦被"想要更多"占据,便永无宁日,越索取越觉得匮乏。唯有懂得知足的人,才能真正拥有恒常的富足——这满足不靠外物堆积而来,而在于内心不再向外索求。
English
When the world follows the Way, war-horses are put out to plow the fields. When the Way is lost, even pregnant mares must foal near the battlefront. No calamity is greater than not knowing when one has enough; no fault is greater than the desire to acquire more. Contentment, then, is not a lack but a fullness that asks nothing further of the world — and only the one who knows this kind of enough remains, quietly, always sufficient.

何かを手に入れれば安らぐと思っていたのに、手に入れた途端、また次が欲しくなる。その繰り返しに疲れたなら、一度立ち止まって、今すでに手にしているものを数えてみるといい。足りないものを追いかける代わりに、足りていることに気づく。その静かな満足こそが、何にも揺るがされない豊かさなのだと、老子は言う。

得到一样东西,以为会安心,可安心没多久,又想要下一样,永远也追不完。老子说,祸患没有比不知足更大的,过错没有比贪得更大的。今日若心里总觉得"还不够",不妨先停下来,数一数已经拥有的。真正的富足,不在于不断向外索取,而在于看清自己此刻其实已经够了,不必再向前奔忙。
A Word for Today
Getting something new rarely settles the wanting for long; soon enough there is a next thing to chase after, and the cycle simply repeats itself. The old text names this clearly: no misfortune is greater than not knowing when one has enough. If today's restlessness whispers "still not enough," it may help to pause and quietly count what is already at hand. Real sufficiency isn't something accumulated from outside. It's simply something noticed, already present.
