English
"To believe everything in the Book of Documents entirely would be worse than having no book at all." Mencius follows this by challenging an exaggerated battle account in a revered classic, insisting that even sacred texts can overstate or distort — a reminder that reading well means weighing a text's claims with one's own judgment, not surrendering to them wholesale.
A Word for Today
Authoritative text is precisely what tempts people to stop thinking for themselves. Mencius points out that even a revered classic can exaggerate or distort, so lesser records certainly can too. Reading exists to widen one's own judgment, not replace it; treating any page as beyond question means giving up the very faculty that made reading worthwhile. Trust the source, but keep asking.
