English

"Fish is what I desire, and bear's paw is also what I desire; if I cannot have both, I would give up the fish and take the bear's paw. Life is also what I desire, and righteousness is also what I desire; if I cannot have both, I would give up life and take righteousness." Mencius moves from an easy culinary choice to the gravest of moral ones, suggesting that choosing integrity over survival can be as natural as choosing one dish over another.

A Word for Today

Choosing fish over bear's paw is easy; everyone manages that without hesitation. What is hard is the choice between advantage and principle, and Mencius uses the small example to point toward the large one. Life-or-death dilemmas are rare, but the daily choice between the profitable path and the honest one is not. Knowing beforehand what you refuse to trade away makes the harder moments less confusing.
