English
The friendship of noble people is plain as water, while that of small-minded people is sweet as fermented wine — yet it is precisely that plainness which lets the former endure, while the latter's sweetness makes it break as easily as it began. Attributed to a conversation about Confucius's own troubles, the line suggests that the depth of a relationship has little to do with how flattering or intense its opening warmth may be.
A Word for Today
The warmth of a new friendship rarely predicts how long it will last. What actually holds people together is usually something quieter — no constant flattery, no anxious reading of every silence as a slight. In today's dealings, a little less eagerness to please and a little more ease might serve better; plain as water, that kind of company tends to be the one still standing years on.
